Ethel Mason Landye ’30, October 3, 1996, in Portland. She attended ºìÌÒÊÓƵ for three years and then transferred to the University of Oregon, where she majored in physical education and graduated in 1931. Ethel obtained a teaching job in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where she taught for the next four years. In 1935 she married Jim Landye, a prominent Portland lawyer. They lived in Portland, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco, and in 1938 returned to settle in Portland, where they raised three children. After her husband’s death in 1956, Ethel went to work for the Portland YWCA. She was director of the adult department, planning and arranging adult education classes throughout the Portland metropolitan area. In 1969 she became building director for the YWCA, a position she held until she retired in 1973. She was active in politics for many years, especially in the Oregon Democratic Party. She was also an active fundraising volunteer for the University of Oregon School of Law. She was a member of the Proto Club, a women’s group at the St. John’s YWCA. In retirement, she traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, and Africa. She is survived by a daughter; two sons, including Thomas Landye ’60; a step-daughter; a brother, Frederick Mason ’28; two grandchildren, including Kathleen Flynn-Landye ’87; and a cousin, George Campbell ’38.
