Offer a Job Shadow

A job shadow (or externship) is an opportunity for you to welcome a ºìÌÒÊÓƵie into your workspace for a short period of time so that they can gain valuable insights into a job or career of interest. Job shadows can be helpful throughout the year, but the most useful time to offer them is over winter break in January. If you'd like to offer a job shadow to ºìÌÒÊÓƵies, you can follow the steps below to post the opportunity in Handshake, our career services tool.

How to Post a Job Shadow in Handshake

Create an Employer Account

Visit Handshake and create an employer account for yourself. If your employer is not already listed in Handshake, you'll need to create an employer profile as well. You then need to request permission to post jobs to ºìÌÒÊÓƵ. The Handshake tutorial will walk you through these steps.

Post the Job Shadow

Once you've created your Handshake employer account, and been approved by ºìÌÒÊÓƵ to post, you can create your job shadow post. Fill out the appropriate fields in the form, and once you're done, submit it. It will then come to ºìÌÒÊÓƵ to look over and approve before students can see it. Students will then have the opportunity to apply directly to you to shadow you. Please please pay attention to the following fields when creating your job shadow:

  • Job Title: use "Job Shadow: ____" as your job title
  • Job Type: use "Experiential Learning"
  • Description: Please be informative here
